PRACTICE / Capacitors in series and parallel

Reduce a mixed capacitor network

Capacitors 3 μF and 6 μF are connected in series. That pair is connected in parallel with a 4 μF capacitor.

Find the total equivalent capacitance.

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • series pair = 3 and 6 μF
  • parallel branch = 4 μF

Ideal initially uncharged capacitors; series intermediate node has zero net charge; the 4 μF branch is across the series pair.

  1. A4/3 μF4/3\ \mathrm{\mu F}
  2. B6 μF6\ \mathrm{\mu F}
  3. C13 μF13\ \mathrm{\mu F}
  4. D2 μF2\ \mathrm{\mu F}
