PRACTICE / Circular force balance

What speed keeps the string taut at the top?

A small mass attached to a light string of length 2 m moves in a vertical circle. Take g = 10 m/s². The string can pull but cannot push.

What is the minimum speed at the bottom for a complete circle with the string just taut at the top?

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Radius: 2 m
  • Height gained from bottom to top: 4 m
  • Gravity: 10 m/s²

Point mass, fixed centre, inextensible massless string, negligible air resistance and no energy loss. The limiting tension at the top is zero.

  1. A10 m s−110\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}
  2. B20 m s−1\sqrt{20}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}
  3. C80 m s−1\sqrt{80}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}
  4. D20 m s−120\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}
