PRACTICE / Measurement uncertainty

When more readings reach a limit

Each length reading has random standard deviation 0.12 mm. Nine independent readings are averaged. A separate independent calibration standard uncertainty of 0.03 mm affects the mean and does not shrink with repetition.

Find the combined standard uncertainty of the mean.

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Random standard deviation per reading: 0.12 mm
  • Number of independent readings: 9
  • Calibration standard uncertainty of the mean: 0.03 mm

The random standard deviation is treated as known; calibration and random components are uncorrelated. No expanded-uncertainty factor is requested.
