PRACTICE / Parallel-axis theorem

Undo the old axis shift first

A thin uniform disc has mass 2 kg and radius 0.30 m. Its inertia about an axis perpendicular to its plane through a rim point is 0.27 kg·m². Find the inertia about a parallel axis 0.60 m from its centre.

What is the new moment of inertia?

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Mass: 2 kg
  • Old axis distance from centre: 0.30 m
  • Old inertia: 0.27 kg·m²
  • New axis distance from centre: 0.60 m

All axes are parallel and perpendicular to the disc; the old and new distances are measured from the central axis.
