PRACTICE / Two-dimensional collisions

Combine two momentum directions

A 0.40 kg puck moves at 6.0 m/s along +x. A 0.20 kg puck moves at 6.0 m/s along +y. They collide and stick on a horizontal surface.

Find the speed of the combined body immediately afterward.

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • m₁ = 0.40 kg, v₁ = (6, 0) m/s
  • m₂ = 0.20 kg, v₂ = (0, 6) m/s

Negligible external horizontal impulse; nonrelativistic perfectly inelastic collision.

  3. C2 m/s2\ \mathrm{m/s}
  4. D62 m/s6\sqrt2\ \mathrm{m/s}
