PRACTICE / AC power and power factor

Separate real power from impedance

A series circuit contains an ideal inductor and a resistor. At one frequency it draws 2.0 A RMS from a 100 V RMS source and absorbs average power 120 W.

Find the inductive reactance at this frequency.

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Vrms = 100 V
  • Irms = 2.0 A
  • Average power P = 120 W

Sinusoidal steady state; resistor accounts for all real power; ideal lossless inductor; no capacitor.
