PRACTICE / Resistors in series and parallel

Simplify the branches before finding the current.

A 6 Ω resistor and a 3 Ω resistor are connected in parallel. This pair is connected in series with a 2 Ω resistor across an ideal 12 V source.

2 Ω6 Ω3 Ω12 V+−
Follow the junctions: one series resistor, then two parallel branches.

What current flows through the 2 Ω resistor?

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Parallel branches: 6 Ω and 3 Ω
  • Series resistor: 2 Ω
  • Source: 12 V

Ideal wires, constant ohmic resistances and a DC steady state. The voltage source has no internal resistance.
