PRACTICE / Zener voltage regulation

Test the clamp before using it

A 9 V ideal source feeds a 500 Ω series resistor. The output node has a 500 Ω load to ground and an ideal reverse Zener to ground with breakdown voltage 6 V.

Find the output voltage.

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Supply: 9 V
  • Series resistor: 500 Ω
  • Load resistor: 500 Ω
  • Ideal breakdown voltage: 6 V

The Zener conducts reverse current only at its 6 V ideal clamp; below breakdown it is open. Ignore leakage and forward conduction for this positive output.
