PRACTICE / EMF and internal resistance

Choose a physically available cell arrangement

Six identical cells each have emf 2 V and internal resistance 1 Ω. They must form equal parallel branches, each with n cells in aiding series, to supply a 1.5 Ω resistor. Allowed n values are 1, 2, 3 and 6.

Which n gives the largest load current?

Organize the givens & assumptions
  • Six identical cells
  • Each: 2 V and 1 Ω
  • Load: 1.5 Ω

Constant ideal emf and positive Ohmic internal resistance over the stated interval; settled DC currents and negligible lead resistance. This is an assigned source model, not battery test data. All cells and equal branches share load symmetrically; no unequal-emf circulating currents.

  1. An=6n=6
  2. Bn=3n=3
  3. Cn=1n=1
  4. Dn=2n=2
